Cow Pose or Bitilasana Pose is a simple and beneficial backbend posture!
Cow Pose may look simple but it can have some powerful benefits, especially when combined with Cat Pose. Cow Pose and Cat Pose are often combined into a flow movement, you might even call them sister postures! These postures are most often performed early in classes as warm up poses. Many consider Cow Pose and Cat Pose as one posture since they are combined so often in yoga classes.
Like many yoga poses, Cow Pose is thought to offer spiritual benefits along with physical benefits. Cow Pose along with Cat Pose is believed to kick in the Swadhisthana Chakra, or second Chakra. The pose combined with breath can also benefit our prana and emotional stability.
Benefits of the posture include providing increased flexibility for the spine and neck, a massage for the internal organs, a stretch for the chest and shoulders. Combined with Cat Pose, this pose can also act to awaken the core and warm up for class.
Downward Facing Dog Pose, and Child’s Pose (Balasana) can act as good prep poses for Cow Pose.
Major Tips: Make sure to keep your shoulders aligned over the top of your wrists and also align your hips above your knees. If you combine Cow Pose with Cat Pose, make sure to connect the poses with breath for maximum benefit. Try not to bend your elbows and keep the neck aligned with the spine if you have a neck injury.
